This bespoke gorilla safari in Rwanda is done from Volcanoes National Park which lies in the northwestern corner of Rwanda bordering Virunga national park of DR. Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. In Africa these are the only countries where the endangered mountain gorilla species are found, this park is also a place where the five out of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga ranges are found including Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo mountains. This park became a base for the America Naturalist Dian Fossey who carried out research on the Gorillas.
The park has got a varied vegetation that favors gorilla stay, these are at higher altitudinal range associated with some montane forest, besides gorillas the park has got other wild animals including the Bush bucks and the endangered golden monkeys, and some elephants though you can leave the park minus seeing them. The park has got around ten gorilla groups that are habituated for tourist visit and therefore, there are around 80 gorilla trekking permits per day.
Gorilla tracking permits in Rwanda costs $1500 per person and those who are always interested to trek gorillas are required to do prior bookings and visitors are required also to arrive at the park headquarters at 7:00am for a pre – tracking briefing from the park rangers. Visitors can also engage in the special events activities that are related to gorilla conservation such as Kwita Izina which is a baby gorilla naming ceremony which take place at every 1st of September every year.
One cannot leave the park minus taking a visit to the Dian Fossey tomb at the former Karisoke Research Centre, a lady who loved the gorillas for the rest of her life and she died as a gorilla conservation martyr, she was buried in this park and taking a tribute towards this great hero is one of the most important aspects one could do after his/her experiential trekking. After trekking, every trekker is given a certificate of appreciation from the park management as a token of primate conservation and community development appreciation.
