Uganda shines with lush green vegetation, Virgin and endless savannah plains, beautiful soaring mountains, deep lakes, the friendliest people on the African continent and home to the remaining population of endangered mountain gorillas.
There’s absolutely no mistaking the bond between man and a mountain gorilla, the great apes when you go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or the Virunga’s. The gorillas are the world great apes and only half of these remaining gentle giants are found only in Uganda.
There are more than 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world, and Uganda is home to half of them, now under strict protection. Several families of around 15 to 20 gorillas reside in this impenetrable forest in the southwest corner of the country, four of which have been habituated to humans.
Uganda can perfectly be visited during all seasons and throughout the year while the weather is perfect all year around. Please keep in mind though that July and August are peak seasons for tracking the mountain gorillas and therefore gorilla permits are more difficult to obtain.
The dry season months are also good to visit for wildlife viewing as the grass is short and animals are easier to find. Gorilla trekking is also rewarding in the dry season as the terrain is manageable for both cars and trekking experience.
Early breakfast, proceed to the park offices for registration and briefing before starting the highlight of our activities; the Gorilla trekking. Encountering the largest and heaviest primates is an adventurous and memorable activity which can’t be easily erased on your mind. Tracking from Bwindi sometimes involves walking up steep densely forested hills; therefore, some fitness may be required.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest starts with a briefing at the park headquarters at around 7:30am. Visitors should sleep early before the day of tracking and wake up by 5am to take breakfast before starting the journey to the park office. After the briefing at the park office, trekkers are separated into smaller groups of 8. Each group of eight track a particular gorilla family.
Some gorilla families live near the park offices while others are found further away. The park guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, two armed rangers and porters move with each group.
The guides are very experienced, knowledgeable and well-trained. While leading tourists to the gorillas, they will share information about the gorilla family and other animals found in the forest.
The time taken tracking gorillas in Bwindi depends on the gorilla group one is assigned to. It can take only 30 minutes to locate some groups while others can take hours. A team of trackers normally go ahead of the group to identify the location of the gorilla family.
They then inform the lead guide by radio call of the exact location of the gorilla family. These advance trackers know where the gorilla group built their last sleeping nests and will head to that direction. There is no guarantee of seeing the gorillas but the chances of spotting the gorillas are over 98%.
Once you spot the family, you will be allowed only one hour with them – so that they don’t start getting uncomfortable. Watching gorillas can be an extremely emotional event as gorillas behave like humans and share about 98 percent of our DNA. Take your time to observe their behaviour and different personalities while taking some great photos for your memories.
